Maybe I will answer this two questions together.
In the future, ERL will extended to Hong Kong Island to Admiralty Station, and its name will be changed to South-North Corridor (SNC). Since there is no enough space to build a station with 12 cars in the underground of Hong Kong Island, ERL/SNC will operate with 9 cars in the future.
Currently, MLR (4M8T) is operating with an acceleration of 2.5 km/h/s ,and ERL's SP1900 (6M6T) is operating with the same acceleration as MLR due to ATO restriction. Together with the passing of Inter-city expresses to China, ERL is only operating with a maximum 24 trains/hour (tph) in the peak hours currently.
The new R-stock will have a higher acceleration (6M3T、3M-T-M units、4.68 km/h/s). Together with the new ATO system, MTR claims that tph in the peak hour can be increase in order to compensate the shortening of trains from 12 cars to 9 cars, as well as installing platform gate. The arrangement of door and chair will also changed in the new R-stock.
Regarding WRL, WRL, Ma On Shan Line (MOSL) and Shatin-central Link Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section (SCL) will join together to form East-west Corridor (EWC). EWC will operate with 8-car SP1900. Therefore, all SP1900 from ERL will be shorten and refurbish into 8 cars (4M4T). Extra cars from shortening and new cars from Japan recently will be added to MOSL and WRL SP1900 to form 8 cars.
Actually, the first set of ERL SP1900 D201/D203 has moved to Pat Heung Depot and shortened into 8 cars (2 T-M-M'-T units). Newly made H317、H353 and H355 has inserted into D317/D318、D353/D354 and D355/D356 (D353/D354 and D355/D356 are former 4-car sets from MOSL. They were inserted with new cars from order KSR991 in 2009 because of the extension of WRL to Hung Hom.) respectively. In total there are 4 sets of 8 car SP1900 in Pat Heung Depot. I guess they are under testing and MTR has not announce when WRL will start operating with 8 cars. As a resident live in Tin Shui Wai (near Ginza), I am really looking forward to see that WRL operating in 8 cars to make the trains less crowd.
In addition, MTR has also purchased 14 sets of AC commuter train from China to run on EWC. It is horrible and terrifying that MTR is trying to copy SP1900 and make their own in China...

2. SP1900 China's Copies (The red one)
3. Materials including chairs from 1st class of D201/D203
